Top 5 Review: Best Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Imagine coming home to your bed after a long day, hoping to get more than 8 hours of blissful, uninterrupted sleep. This is something I’ve dreamt about at one point or another. I kept trying to figure out the right formula.

I’ve changed my bed, my pillows, and my mattress. As it turns out, the mattress topper may actually be the key to solving this dilemma. That’s why I made it my mission to find the best memory foam mattress topper in the market so that I can finally experience what sleep should be like.

Factors to Consider

Just to get it out there, I’ve had back problems for a while now, thus the need for a decent topper. Note also that a mattress toppers is different from a mattress pad. It also plays a different role from a mattress protector. This is one factor that could make a lot of reviews misleading. Sometimes, people buy mattress toppers not knowing that they do not need a topper at all.

So what do you need to consider before making a final decision?

Health Concerns

Do you have back issues? Did you go through surgery recently? Although some people just want that extra comfort that mattress toppers offer, others need it because of specific health issues they need to address. If this is the case, you would probably need something that offers amazing support to your body.

Some may think that the softer the bed is, the better. In reality, having a bed that’s too soft may have serious repercussions on the body. You need something that’s firm enough to improve your posture and allow you to remain comfortable regardless of your sleeping position.

Mattress in use

Remember that this is just a topper, and not the mattress itself. If you’re uncomfortable sleeping on your bed because it is too firm, a mattress topper that’s either too thin or is also firm will not help. You have to choose a topper depending on what your mattress’s weakness is.

Materials

Generally, foam is hotter than fiber-fill and other materials used for toppers. You may look for gel-infused foam, which has a cooling effect, but this could be an issue if you are allergic to the materials used.

Thickness

Do you need a 4-inch topper, or is a 2-inch one enough for your needs? Would a 1-inch topper be a waste of money? The thickness of your topper has a huge impact on its overall comfort. I suggest finding out what your issues are with your mattress so that you can make a better decision. If, for example, your mattress is lumpy, then a thin topper may not be such a good idea.

Price

Generally, mattress toppers of the same size and thickness all fall within the same price range. So if you have a specific budget you want to work with, the options are usually straightforward enough to be narrowed down.

Another factor you may want to look at would be the overall quality, especially if you really want to get the best value for your money. Going through reviews would be the best way to go about this.

Best Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

I sifted through reviews and popped in and out of stores to get a feel of the different options. From there, I realized that these five gave me the most value for my money.

Memory Foam Solutions Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Pad Bed Topper

Made of polyurethane, this topper has extra cooling gel to make it easier for the foam to conform to your body for total comfort. It’s perfect for those who have back problems, especially if your pressure points have been cause for sleepless nights. Its material effectively reduces pressure points that typically make me toss and turn at night.

This topper is also soft enough for your body to sink in comfortably, but supportive enough to make sure you don’t sink in too deep. It’s also cooler than a lot of other mattress toppers.

Toppers usually took time to settle once unpacked. I was expecting a good 2-4 days of waiting for the material to settle on the mattress. But in the case of the Memory Foam Solutions topper, it was fully opened within 24 hours. I did notice that it has a strong chemical smell though, but the odor went away after airing it out for a day or two.

With good quality and absolute comfort combined, the Memory Foam Solutions Visco elastic mattress topper is quite a steal, considering the price.

SleepJoy ViscO2 Ventilated Memory Foam Mattress Topper

This brand takes pride in making the first breathable, open-cell memory foam that gives a high level of comfort. It uses plant-based ingredients, making it a great choice for those who want to minimize the amount of chemicals they bring into their homes.

One common issue I see about memory toppers in reviews is the fact that the foam usually gets hotter as you sleep. It’s great that SleepJoy put this into consideration when they designed their toppers. Air flow is amazing under the covers, so the topper stays cool even if you find yourself sleeping beyond the usual hours. That makes it an absolute dream to sleep on. Add to that the fact that the material is both soft and supportive enough to keep the usual back pains at bay, and you have a real winner.

Another thing that I really like about this product is that it’s odor-neutralized, so it does not have that usual chemical smell most toppers have. Although your nose could sense a bit of chemical smell the first time it is taken out of its packaging, the smell goes away faster than any other topper.

You may notice that the top and the sides of the foam takes a yellowish hue the longer you use it. Apparently, this is normal and should not be a cause for concern. It doesn’t affect the way the topper works, and it does not have any impact on safety.

It’s not exactly the cheapest mattress topper in the market, but seeing how innovative the entire process is for it to work this way, I’d say it’s still reasonably-priced.

Superior Twin Mattress Topper, Hypoallergenic White Down Alternative Featherbed Mattress Pad

Made with soft microfiber, this topper is both breathable and hypoallergenic. This makes the material cool enough to give you a good night’s sleep, and does not pose the usual problems foam toppers have in terms of temperature. It is also great for those who are unable to use regular toppers because of allergies.

There may be a need to reposition the topper every so often. You may also find that it does not really go back to its usual form, and your body will be clearly indented into it (especially if you don’t move around or change positions all that much). After all, it’s not your usual memory foam that’s expected to spring right back. But repositioning it once in a while is not such a big deal considering the amount of comfort that it brings. Fluff it up a bit if you notice that all the stuffing has moved to one side, and you’ll be good to go again.

Sleep Innovations 4-Inch Dual Layer Mattress Topper

Sleep Innovations claims that sleeping on their mattress topper will make you experience what it feels like to sleep on a cloud. Although I have no idea how it feels to sleep on a cloud, I must say that this topper gives amazing comfort, especially for someone with back issues like me.

It’s 4 inches all in all – that’s a combination of 2 inches of cooling gel memory foam, plus another 2 inches of fiber-fill. Others will wonder whether 4 inches really is necessary. But with this mix of technologies, the pairing of materials really does help in making sleep as sound as possible, especially if you have disc issues.

It took two full days for the topper to expand to its right form. But that was okay, because it was the same amount of time needed for that soft chemical smell to go away.

This topper is definitely more expensive than other options on this list, but that’s understandable considering the fact that it is also thicker. This topper has also been proven to last, so that’s a pretty good was to invest your money, especially if you’re getting a good night’s sleep with it.

DreamFoam 2" Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper

DreamFoam uses nothing but high-quality materials, all CertiPUR-US certified. This makes this topper not only heavy-duty, but safe to use as well.

It’s the perfect product to use if your mattress is too firm. Just like the other toppers I’ve included on this list, it’s the perfect combination of being soft enough to give you that feeling of sinking onto a bed of clouds, but not too soft that it becomes unsupportive of your body.

The DreamFoam Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper works well no matter what your favorite sleeping position is. It remembers your body form, but it adjusts easily the moment you decide to move around and move into a different position.

You may notice that the foam is cool to the touch without the sheets, but it gets warm pretty fast when you have sheets over it. This is okay for those who get cold easily, but if you prefer something that offers better ventilation (especially those in warmer regions), you may want to look at a completely different option.

My Overall Review

After trying out all the best-selling mattress toppers on Amazon, I have realized that all of them did the job perfectly. However, the Memory Foam Solutions Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Pad Bed Topper stood out from the rest because it significantly reduced my back pain.

Back sleepers of moderate weight will benefit the most out of this topper. The only thing you should remember is that it traps more body heat compared to a normal mattress. This is a good buy, especially for anyone who wants extra cushioning for excruciatingly uncomfortable beds.
